Phonics

At Lion we focus on teaching children a range of skills to enable them to be successful readers that fosters a life long love of reading.

For those children who join us and are at the early stages of reading we teach phonics through a Systematic Synthetic Phonics Programme based on the DfE approved programme, Essential Letters and Sounds. 

For these children who have been identified still to be at the early stages of reading, phonics is taught daily and designed and focused to teach children how to read through the act of decoding and blending. Teaching a Systematic Synthetic Phonics Programme teaches the children the link between the sounds of our language (phonemes) and the written representation of these sounds (graphemes), or the spellings of the sounds contained within the English language.
